In human terms, that means “what a delightful performance!”

Hairy-Group-2013

We brought the boys – yes, even my squishy little bubba Zac – to the Drama Centre Theatre at National Library Building this evening to catch Hairy Maclary and Friends on stage this afternoon. And I have to say that even the adults were suitably impressed by the show.

From the moment Hairy Maclary and his canine friends bounded onto stage, we knew that it was going to be one of those feel good shows that was both fun and funny. The stage adaptation of Lynley Dodd’s beloved series is held together by Miss Plum, the gentle and sweet owner of Hairy Maclary, and town butcher Samuel Stone, who recounted story after story of the dogs using simple verses and catchy tunes.

If it’s a tight plot you are looking for, you won’t find it here. But what you will get is an hour of enjoyable singing and laughter-inducing prancing on stage. I thought the performers were great: while the actors playing Hairy Maclary and the other five dogs did not necessarily have very dog-like movements throughout, they certainly made up for it with their high levels of energy. The audience interaction was also excellent – it was obvious that the kids loved it.

My 2.5-year-old had fun initially, he was smiling and clapping along with the performers. But he grew restless somewhere during the 30-minute mark and the rest of the performance could barely hold his attention. The show is probably more suitable for preschoolers and above, they would more likely be able to understand the jokes and be engaged by the actors.

Personally, I loved the bits with Scarface Claw the Tomcat and Zachary Quack the duck the most – as a cat owner, I thought the silly tomcat was hilarious. And the segment featuring the duck was cleverly staged, especially when Hairy Maclary fell into the water.

On the way home after the performance, Aidan kept asking us where the dogs were. I guess that means he likes them!
