I started buying products from iHerb back in 2011, when I decided that it was time we cut down on the amount of chemicals that we come into contact with on a daily basis. iHerb was – and still is – a godsend in that area, allowing me to purchase products made from natural ingredients at an affordable price.
At the beginning, I was pretty naive. As long as the manufacturers say that the product is “natural” or “organic”, I was sold. As long as it didn’t contain any sulphates, I assumed that it was good for us. It wasn’t until I discovered ewg that I realised so many of the so-called “good” products may not necessarily be that good for us after all.
What is ewg?
Short for Environmental Working Group, the organisation aims to empower consumers with knowledge to live healthier lifestyles, and to allow parents to protect their families from harmful chemicals. One of the ways in which it does so is through its Consumer Guides.
The Consumer Guides offer advice and information to help consumers choose products and goods that are not only environmentally friendly but are also free from toxics. They rank items such as household cleaning products, make up, toiletries and cosmetics according to the number of toxic ingredients – and it’s been such a wonderful resource for me! Whenever I need to stock up on products from detergent to shampoo to the boys’ bubble bath, I will do a quick check on the guides to see what products are high on the safety list, before placing the order on iHerb.
Pre-ewg, I had been relying on a so-called “green” brand for my household cleaning needs for a while. Then, a quick check on the site told me that the brand’s range of goods were scoring Bs and Cs in terms of its toxicity! As much as I can, I try to go for items that score an A/1 out of 10 in ewg’s guides.
These days, I almost never buy any household cleaning products from the supermarkets. Our toiletries are direct from iHerb as well. If you aren’t sure where to start, let me share with you some of my favourite (and SAFE and GREEN) buys!
My favourite buys
I love biokleen. LOVE. I know, how can anyone love a household cleaning thingy right? But I do.
I first knew of biokleen when we embarked on cloth diapers – Bac-Out was supposedly great for keeping soiled diapers free from odours. I shipped this giant bottle over and woah, three years later, I am still using it. It’s really great for removing funky smells from fabrics, as well as stains. It uses plant-based surfactants and natural enzymes to kill bacteria, which is essentially a YAY. I love the brand so much that I started buying other products.
Oh, and they score an A in the consumer guide. WIN.
Has a score of 1 out of 10. I love this on my littles’ – it makes up their quintessential baby scent and I love sniffing their hair when they sleep at night. It’s gentle on their hair (no need for detanglers) and a little goes a long way.
This is such a great budget buy. It smells lovely and is ever so gentle on my dry skin. It’s got a score of 1.
Oh, where do I even begin?
This one. This one is my miracle product. I have extremely dry skin on my legs and feet, and I used to get cracked heels. Just awful. I started on this and within three applications, the ugly white cracks disappeared.
This one is just amazing on my Sahara desert skin, especially in air-conditioned rooms. It feels heavy on the initial application but is very quickly absorbed. AND it has a score of 1. I use their hand lotion and lip balm too, all with excellent scores too.
I am a stickler for sunscreen whenever we hit the pool or the beach. Guys, SKIN CANCER and UV RAYS. (And fine lines and sunspot on the face…) ‘Nuff said.
This one is easy to apply and has a score of 1 (best) out of 10 (TERRIBLE! TERRIBLE!) on the toxicity scale.
So there you have it, my must-haves for a greener, toxic-free home. If you are making your first purchase from iHerb, get 5 percent off your total order with this code: OTI683.
